Adopt a Gibbon

Meet Patou!

Great Pyrenees Sebastien
and Pup, Patou.

IPPL's property and gibbons have always benefited from the protection of wonderful dogs. We have a handsome dog on our "team." His name is Patou. He is a Great Pyrenees who came to us from Canada, where he joined Sebastien, a formely abused "rescue dog." Sebastien passed on in 1998 at the age of 11 years. Great Pyrenees are "working dogs" and often live with sheep as protective members of a flock. Instead of sheep, Patou and Ivy, our female Great Pyrenees, have 30 gibbons to protect.

Sebastien, our big guy, was a good guard dog but a smooch when he got to know you. Guests had to watch out- he waited for a guest to leave the door open and occupied the bed. I mean "occupied" in the military sense, it was very hard to dislodge Sebastien, even with food bribes!

Patou was born on 28 October 1995. You can see him here with Michelle Martin. You can also see Patou's beautiful mother who is called Caropa Dolly Dawn d'Adour, also shown with Michelle (Patou's dad is called Blazer).

Bullet and Beanie with animal care director Donetta

Bulllet is our miracle dog.  Patou and Ivy started barking at something laying just outside IPPL's paremeter fence one day in autumn of 1998. Upon investigation, our animal staff found a small dog in grave condition. He was starved, dehydrated and infested with ticks. His eyes were red and inflamed. He also had an open wound on his right side. The vet's examination revealed that the injuries to his side and eyes were caused by shot gun pellets.

Due to the generosity of some IPPL members contributing to his emergency care, Bullet has made an excellent recovery.  Although he will never regain his sight, it doesn't seem to bother him at all.  Patou and Ivy are very affectionate with him and he has made a special friend with Beanie, an IPPL gibbon who also lost his sight early in life.
