~ Position ~

The Facilities and Maintenance Manager leads the maintenance team at IPPL and works closely with the Curator of Animal Care and the Sanctuary Director to ensure the animals have the environment they need to thrive. While remaining highly hands-on, this position serves as the primary point of contact for day-to-day activities, ensuring optimal facility function and the safety and well-being of our primate residents. This role requires a 40-hour work week, including some weekend work and the ability to respond to emergencies outside of regular hours. This role is instrumental in creating a safe and comfortable environment for our animals, staff, and visitors.

 

~ Responsibilities ~

Team Leadership and Supervision

  • Lead, train, and guide the maintenance team to foster a collaborative and efficient work environment. This includes coordinating daily activities, delegating tasks, and monitoring progress to ensure high-quality completion and efficiency. Manage the full employee lifecycle, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and professional growth.

 

Operational Management and Systems Maintenance:

  • Develop and implement efficient maintenance schedules and procedures. Manage and prioritize work orders using the CMMS platform and conduct regular inspections to address infrastructure needs proactively. Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all buildings, grounds, and critical systems, including electrical, plumbing, and HVA

 

Habitat Construction and Animal Security:

  • Collaborate with the Curator of Animal Care to design and implement environmental features that enhance animal habitats, ensuring proper animal welfare and habitat functionality. Lead the construction, maintenance, and refurbishment of species-specific animal habitats. Prioritize and enforce strict containment protocols, performing rigorous inspections of primary enclosures, shift doors, and perimeter fencing to ensure 100% security for the residents and staff.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure all repairs and groundskeeping tasks comply with USDA, OSHA, and other relevant regulatory standards. Lead safety briefings and training sessions, promoting strict adherence to all protocols. Serve as a core member of the facility emergency response team, assisting in the development and execution of emergency procedures.

 

Planning and Inventory Management:

  • Collaborate on long-term maintenance strategies and capital improvement plans. Manage the inventory of supplies and tools, researching and procuring new equipment or techniques to improve the sanctuary’s operational effectiveness.

 

Communication and Coordination:

  • Serve as the primary liaison for maintenance requests from other departments. Serve as the primary point of contact for external contractors and supervise them to ensure quality work and compliance with animal safety protocols. Provide clear weekly reporting on project updates and maintain comprehensive digital records of all maintenance tasks.

 

~ Qualifications ~

  • Experience in facility maintenance with 2+ years in a supervisory/lead role.
  • Proven proficiency in general building trades, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry. Vocational certification is preferred.
  • Advanced problem-solving and critical-thinking skills with the ability to develop "out-of-the-box" solutions for complex issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to foster positive relationships across departments.
  • Proficiency with digital tools for work orders, inventory management, and reporting.
  • Ability to lift 50 + lbs and work comfortably on ladders, at heights, and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must provide proof of a negative TB test and stay current on required vaccinations for working near primates.

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Our Maintenance Technicians provide essential hands-on support to ensure the safety, functionality, and beauty of the International Primate Protection League (IPPL) sanctuary. Reporting directly to the Maintenance Lead, this role is responsible for the daily execution of repairs, habitat upkeep, and grounds maintenance. Maintenance Technicians play a vital role in creating a secure and comfortable environment for our resident primates through technical skills and dedication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and emergency repairs, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and painting.
  • Assist in the construction, refurbishment, and repair of animal habitats.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of buildings and grounds to identify potential issues before they require major repair.
  • Work alongside the other maintenance and animal care staff to ensure project alignment.
  • Strictly adhere to all sanctuary protocols regarding working around non-human primates, including maintaining a mandatory no-contact policy and following all strict boundary restrictions.
  • Maintain compliance with USDA, OSHA, and internal sanctuary safety protocols at all times.
  • Utilize digital management software to receive tasks, track progress, and log completed work.
  • Provide regular updates to you supervisor regarding project status, equipment needs, and any observed hazards.
  • Use materials efficiently and help maintain inventory records to monitor supply needs.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Proficiency with power tools and industrial equipment.
  • Strong problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking to troubleshoot issues effectively.
  • High attention to detail and situational awareness regarding safety, security and animal presence.
  • Reliable and able to remain calm, composed, and focused.
  • Comfortable using computers or mobile devices for work order management and basic reporting.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs, work on ladders, at heights, and outdoors in all weather's conditions.
  • Valid driver's license, negative TB test, and current vaccinations (Tetanus, etc.) are required for sanctuary access.

Desirable Skills

  • Welding and fabrication.
  • Knowledge of specialized paints and coatings
  • 2+ years of facility maintenance or a related trade (carpentry, electrical, etc.) is, preferred.
