Farewell Satu

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved Satu otter. Satu, whose name means “one” in Malay, was born at the Singapore Zoological Gardens on April 4, 2001.

In February of 2006, Satu and his brother Dua were sent to the Monterey Bay Aquarium where the two quickly became famous for their antics and because Dua liked to “play” a small electric keyboard the keepers would give them as enrichment. In 2009 they were retired and sent  to IPPL to live the life of an otter with their own private pool and no piano!

Satu was originally housed with his Dua but he escaped one day and the staff found him trying to get into the enclosure of a young female otter named Agape. They let him in and the two immediately bonded. During his life at IPPL, Satu outlived three mates; Agape, Daphne and Olive.

He loved eating chicken gizzards and butterfish as well as playing with, and hiding, small rocks. He always greeted visitors happily and was never aggressive. At 17 years of age, Satu was the oldest otter IPPL has ever had. He will be greatly missed by everyone.
